Watch and listen to the waterfowl on McKay Pond and in the fall of the year experience the amazing migration of the Canada goose. The pond is on the migration route and some evenings flock after flock arrive to rest, oftentimes covering the water by day break.
Every morning at 5-6 am you may catch a glimpse of our resident bald eagle sitting atop the dune, watching for his breakfast. If you're really lucky, you may see him dive to pick out a fresh fish from the pond.
From the verandah stroll down the steps and across the yard to a great and beautiful sand dune covered with marram grass and wild roses. Stop to pick some wild flowers or wild strawberries in the yard.
The beach is just beyond the dune and 200 feet from the house -- close enough to conveniently go back and forth to the beach all day as well as use the refreshing outdoor shower to rinse off salt water. This beach is one of the most private on the island, known for its beauty, quietness and seclusion, and at low tide you can walk to distant farmland and red cliffs along the shore.
At the end of the day, take time to gather around the outdoor Chinook for an evening fire, roast marshmallows and relive the events of the day. Evening fires are somewhat of an island tradition along the shoreline, and an ideal setting to enjoy company and catch evening shore birds, sea breezes and the silhouette of the dunes as the ripe sun sinks beyond the horizon. The perfect ending to the perfect day.
